First time I drove the B-Class FCELL in 2016 it was a different car than the GLC-Class FCELL. Suddenly, I can chose whether I would like to charge the battery or just continue driving using the fuel cell or driving using the battery. It is like a hybrid in a hybrid. Mercedes has managed to develop the next generation of electric cars, and the GLC-Class FCELL has a bigger battery as well than other fuel cell cars, though not as big as pure battery-electric cars. I found this revolutionary!
At the Hannover Fair, where one had the chance to test drive several futuristic vehicles, there was also another GLC-Class FCELL on display at a stand and I had the chance to look into the engine. Of course at the first moment it just looks like a petrol or diesel engine, but on second sight you realise there is something different. An electric engine is much smaller, and there is the fuel cell as well. I am not en engineer, I just drive the car, I am enduser. I apply the technology on the street. The reason I am not writing so much about the specs is because I go on long-distance road trips and collect data myself. Then I look at the results and make my own interpretations.
What I found out when I was sitting inside, is that the interior has a nice superior finish. It is all very Mercedes, it is quality and it is made for the passengers to feel well inside. I sat in so many different Mercedes since I was small and until now, and it is interesting how the basic elements can be redefined every time, and even in taking a totally new technology into account. I hope I can take this model and also other Mercedes electric and fuel cell cars on road trips and get a better impression.
Also, as is always my message, when I hold presentations, I invite anybody to sit in a futuristic car and make your own picture. Pres the Start button and Go. It is not up to me to say which car is better. I do my tests and everyone has a different driver profile. Mine is to drive long distances ROAD TRIPS, go on WINTER TESTS, and try public transport or sip some wine URBAN&CULTURE.
